We are thrilled to present 3 AfroCuban Dance Workshops with our next international guest instructor: Ingrid Diaz (Cuba). We had the pleasure to collaborate with Ingrid DC Martinez in 2022, when she was part of our original dance theatre production “The Power of the Drum”… you do not want to miss the opportunity to learn authentic AfroCuban dance from this amazing and knowledgeable artist!!! Bio: Born and raised in Cuba, Ingrid is a graduate of the Cuban National School of Art (BFA Modern, Contemporary and Afro-Cuban Dance, 2002) and the National Institute of Art (MA Afro-Cuban Dance, 2005). Ingrid is also a graduate of the School of Ballet Creole (Toronto, 2007) and Decidedly Jazz Professional Training Program (Calgary, 2011) Her professional career includes companies such as Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba (2002 - 2005 Company member), Ballet Creole (Toronto 2005 - 2009 Company member) and Three Left Feet Movement Creations (Calgary 2011 - To date. Company member / Artistic Producer) Ingrid also had the pleasure to perform as a guest artist with Nafro Dance (Winnipeg 2007), the South African Musical Umoja in its 2008 Canadian Tour Production, Newton Moraes Dance Theatre (Toronto 2008), COBA (Toronto 2009), Bach Tots Performing Arts (Calgary 2018) and TEADE (Matanzas, Cuba 2019). Since the early age of seventeen Ingrid has been choreographing and leading classes and workshops in prestigious dance schools and companies such as the Cuban National School of Art (Dance and Musical Theatre Schools), the National Afro - Cuban Dance Company, Havana Rakatan and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks; most recently becoming the Director of the Professional Training Program. Since 2019 Ingrid has also been leading various courses in the specialties of Jazz and Ballet as a sessional instructor for The School of Creative and Performing Arts of the University of Calgary.

Introduction to Afrocuban Folklore: Understanding the history and music of the African diaspora.

Date: Saturday, October 17, 2020 from 10:30am to 12:00pm

Description: this workshop is a must for both dancers and musicians alike who want to develop a strong foundation on Afrocuban Folklore. The format will be a combination of lecture, Q&A, and real life examples. Students will gain a better understanding of the African influences in Cuban music, including:

-A brief history of the transatlantic slave trade
-Overview of the different African cultures that made it to Cuba and their contributions to Cuban culture
-Instrumentation and examples of different African styles
-Creole styles: the mixing of culture, and its contribution to art and music
-General overview of how we got from African music, to rumba, to Salsa

This is the foundations workshop that will prepare students for the next ones in this workshop series, which will include deep dives on Orisha music and Cuban rumba, among others!

Flamenco Fundamentals and Styling

Take your Latin dance to the next level by integrating traditional and contemporary elements of Flamenco dance. In this workshop, you will explore and discover new ways of using your body, and adopting the delicate, yet precise arm and hand movements. Through percussive exercises, you will develop a means to unleash your inner groove, and learn the foundation behind this highly emotional cultural Spanish dance. As part of the workshop, participants will understand how these elements are not limited to flamenco, but will further help develop dancers in every genre with elements of technique, rhythm, and improvisation. Join visiting dancer Anastassiia Alexander on this one-time workshop.

Biography
Anastassiia is a Russian-born, Mexican flamenco dancer trained in Canada, Mexico, and Madrid, Spain. Her range of expression and improvisation is demonstrated through a variety of productions including her own 12 Musascontemporary flamenco ensemble and beyond. Pushing the boundaries of flamenco, Anastassiia has integrated her work in a variety of genres, including opera, spoken word, and media art. Currently, she focuses on deconstructing and weaving together the structures of flamenco performance, which led to her recent creation De(RE)-construct: Dance (Re)-Born, presented at the Calgary Fluid Fest 2019. As part of the Virtual Victoria Flamenco Festival, Anastassiia captivated audiences with her presentation of Interoception, a contemporary flamenco dance film that incorporates elements of digital painting, video art, dance and music to create an immersive audio-visual experience. Anastassiia is also a recipient of Flamenco Rosario’s 2019 Creative Residency and will be an artist-in-residence at Good Women Dance Collective in Edmonton fall 2020
